Intent Implementation & Impact
At Dobcroft Infant School we teach children the mechanics of writing by first focusing on transcriptional skills and then front loading our curriculum with SPaG content so that the children have the knowledge to be able to write cohesively and fluently.
We expose the children to a wide range of high-quality texts and are explicit about the purpose and audience to enable children to make appropriate choices that fit the audience they are writing for.
Class teachers carefully choose the high quality model texts for their year group, as well as the key vocabulary from that model text children will be taught, and then will understand and embed in their leanring. These vocabulary choices are shared with all teaching staff, as well as with parents and carers on the KS1 Knowledge Organisors (found on the Knowledge Organisors page).
Each writing block starts with the direct teaching of these key vocabulary words, using drama and images to connect the meanings in pupils' minds. These words are then put on the writing display in each classroom so pupils are constantly using them in their oral and written composition.
We follow the Read Write Inc phonic scheme, and also use the RWI handwriting phrases and images across school. Any irregular letter fora mtion is picked up on and corrected using these phrases. Please see the Progression Maps page to see each year group termly expectations.
