DOBCROFT INFANT SCHOOL

Key words to print

Class: Mice Year: 2019 - 2020

Hello school starters!

Here is a list of the Reception key words. These are words that children need to learn to read by sight - they cannot be decoded or 'sounded out'. The best way to learn them is using flashcards and playing games with them.

Children need to see each word 100 times before they remember it. Start with 3 words and when they know one, you can put it on the 'I know these' pile and add a new one in it's place.

Also attached is a list of the first one hundred key words. Your child will learn these over the next two years. Once they know these words, they will be able to sight read 50% of all the words they will see in children's literature. Incredible isn't it!

For this reason, it is very important that children learn to recognise them fairly quickly. They don't need to know them all now, and indeed, they may not be ready for them yet, but if, when they are ready, you can support your child in learning this word bank, you will be really helping their reading progress. Here are some ideas for games to play to learn sight reading of high frequency, or key words.
