Maths Mastery Meeting

Date: 28th Sep 2016 @ 4:19pm

Thanks so much to all of those who came to our Maths Mastery meeting yesterday evening. I left the meeting feeling excited to get started on our maths mastery journey and hope that you all did too! I have attached the presentation from last night. Please have a look through and talk to your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

I also wanted to share some of the feedback we received at the meeting last night.

'Well explained meeting. Good way through Maths Mastery to introduce the language. Especially because studies show that children in later years struggle with the language of maths or understanding the questions in written form. The part - part- whole model might confuse the children being this way around as the answer is at the start'. Thanks for your comment, we think that maths mastery is fantastic at helping children to develop mathematical thinking and use the appropriate language too. We completely understand your concern about the part-part-whole model, and it is something that the mathematics mastery team are well aware of. The children start off by seeing the parts first and then the whole, but as they move through the units, they are deepening their understanding of this model and using it parts first, whole first, whole at the top and parts underneath and vice versa. Please speak to class teachers to see examples of this as my explanation in written form may have confused you even more!

'Thank you for this very informative evening. The Maths Mastery system sounds fantastic and I look forward to applying some of the techniques with my child at home. Thanks for all your incredible hard work.' Thanks, we think it's fantastic too! Enjoy practising at home, and please let us know about fantastic maths work at home, we'd love to celebrate your success.

'Very useful meeting. I suggest combining the meetings into one longer one.' After speaking to SLT, it has been decided that the Welcome to Y1 meeting will be on one night, and the Literacy/Numeracy meetings will be on another. There will only be two meetings instead of three, which we hope works better for everybody.

'A great app is Moose Math by Duck Duck Moose' Thanks for the suggestion. It definitely looks like the children will love it!

'Games for the car: car snooker! 1 point for red car, then 'pot' a colour'. Wow, sounds like great fun. Thanks for the suggestion!

'Good informative session. Particularly useful with regards to the type of language to use.' Thanks for this. We like  to know what parents find useful so we'll also start putting the units 'Star Words' on the website before we start each unit so that you know the vocabularly to be using at home.

'Would it be feasible to run the literacy and numeracy sessions on the same night, then maybe offer it a couple of times?' Yes! After speaking to SLT, it has been decided that the Welcome to Y1 meeting will be on one night, and the Literacy/Numeracy meetings will be on another. There will only be two meetings instead of three, which we hope works better for everybody.

'Please could Welcome to Year 1 meeting, SPaG, and maths all be on the same night?' After speaking to SLT, it has been decided that the Welcome to Y1 meeting will be on one night, and the Literacy/Numeracy meetings will be on another. There will only be two meetings instead of three, which we hope works better for everybody.

'The part part whole model might make more sequencing sense if it was parts first and whole after'. We completely understand this, and it is something that the mathematics mastery team are well aware of. The children start off by seeing the parts first and then the whole, but as they move through the units, they are deepening their understanding of this model and using it parts first, whole first, whole at the top and parts underneath and vice versa. Please speak to class teachers to see examples of this as my explanation in written form may have confused you even more!

'Could the maths vocabularly be put on the website week by week or unit by unit?' Yes, we will update the blogs for each class with the vocabulary for each unit before we start. The star words for this unit will be up within the next couple of days!

Thanks again for your continued support,

Miss Dray
